About Geckoboard

1. What is Geckoboard?

  • Geckoboard is a real-time status board that allows businesses to see all their key metrics in one place.
  • It integrates with many of the online services that businesses already use (see full list below), summarises these services to distill the key messages and displays these in a way that's easy to understand and interpret.
  • For services Geckoboard doesn't yet support and for data locked up in company databases, users can use the Geckoboard API, making it easy for companies to get the key data to the people who need it.
  • A Geckoboard status board is made up of "widgets". Users select and configure widgets to connect to 3rd party services and retrieve the data they want to display.
  • Widgets can be positioned by dragging them around the dashboard.
  • Geckoboard is Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), which means it's hosted by us, does not require any downloads and is available anywhere you can connect to the web.
  • Geckoboard can be displayed on HDTVs in the workplace or on smaller devices like tablets or smart phones.
  • Geckoboard is a vital signs monitor for businesses. Instead of waiting for an end-of-week report pack to tell you how you're doing you can see it live, as it happens, allowing businesses to react faster to events and take advantage of unique opportunities only available in real time.
  • Geckoboard does not use Flash so it can be displayed on iPads and iPhones.
  • Widgets are designed to be attractive and easy to interpret at-a-glance (the widget design process can sometimes take our team several weeks and 20+ iterations to get right).
  • Read-only Geckoboards can be shared by an administrator using a hard-to-guess URL making it perfect for sharing with colleagues or external parties. When the administrator decides to revoke access it only takes 1 click to ensure the URL is no longer accessible.
  • Geckoboard entered private beta in July 2010 and had over 9,000 beta signups from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies and Government agencies.

2. Pricing

Geckoboard offers a 30 day free trial that converts to a monthly recurring subscription with 4 account types offering price based on the number of simultaneous connections - how many people can view your dashboards at any one time. For example, if you have a HDTV displaying your status board 24/7, that counts as 1 connection. Say you want to view it on your laptop too, that's 2 connections. If you leave the office and want to check it on your smartphone that would also count as 2 simultaneous connections (assuming your laptop is disconnected but your HDTV is not). Customers get a 30 day free trial on signup.

To keep things simple every account has:

  • 8 dashboards.
  • Custom CSS (style you dashboard you way).
  • Unlimited custom widgets.

Geckoboard customers can choose between one of 4 account types: S, M, L or XL. The difference between each account is the number of simultaneous connections allowed - prices are:

  • S: $9 per month.
  • M: $19 per month.
  • L: $49 per month.
  • XL: $199 per month.

Users can get their data onto their Geckoboard quickly and without hassle in 3 easy ways:

  2. Connecting to a third party widget store like GeckoFuel who host widget connection to even more services
  3. Using the Geckoboard API to write simple script to connect to services Geckoboard does not yet connect to or data locked up in their own system.

7. About the Founder

  • Paul Joyce, 34
  • Lives in Kent, England with his wife and 2 children
  • Previously freelanced for blue chip organisations designing and building data warehouses for BI and MI reporting
  • Started working on Geckoboard in March 2010 and launched the private beta 3.5 months later in July
  • Quit the day job in September 2010 when the beta started gaining traction
  • Bootstrapped the startup cost (including external designers and developers) from savings until December 2010 when the seed round closed
  • Investment is being used to rapidly increase the number of integrations we support and to hire a Support & Community Manager (Paul's younger sister Ciara)
